Local emergency services after the incidentsocial mediaIn a statement, Russian troops attacked “schools and boarding schools”.
The statement said the bombing happened shortly after midnight and that the school at the scene was set on fire “as a result of the shelling”.
Emergency services also released a video showing the building being severely damaged, with only the outer walls still standing. Destroyed playgrounds can be seen in the film, along with pieces of the Ukrainian flag hanging from broken windows.
Lines of damaged cars and trucks could also be seen outside the premises.
Chernihiv region governor Viacheslav Chaus said in a Telegram post earlier that the shelling resulted in casualties without specifying the number. Paramedics are still “on the spot”.
In addition to the school building, “administrative buildings and private residences were also damaged during the shelling,” Kaos said.
The Ukrainian military had previously said that Russian forces “launched artillery bombings” in the Chernihiv area.
Chernihiv was the main target of the initial Russian invasion of Ukraine. In recent weeks, there have been fewer attacks in the region than in the eastern part of the country.
