Police reported that at 4 p.m. Thursday, one of the streets of South La Brea and SlaussonPetrol pumpmany incidentsVehicleVideo obtained by mainstream media shows the accident occurred around 1.40 p.m. when a dark-coloured Mercedes passed a red light at a Windsor Hills intersection at 100mph without braking. Hit two cars. The vehicle collided with a roadside gas station in a fireball.
Six people were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol, with a pregnant woman and an infant found in a burnt-out car.
Witness Veronica Esquival, who was filling up at a gas station a few feet away, said she covered her head to protect herself as debris flew wildly as the vehicle hit the car. “Suddenly, a child flew from the middle of the square to the middle of the gas station and landed on the ground directly in front of me.” A worker came and saw me holding the child, and he took the child from me. Someone tried to revive the child, but it was too late.”
Another witness, Alfonso Verde, said he was only a few parking spaces away from the intersection when the accident happened “like a bomb”. “Like I said, the things that touch me the most are the kids, who don’t have a chance. This mother was probably glad she was going to have a baby.”
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was called to the intersection of South La Brea Avenue and Slawson Avenue near Ladera Park just before 1:40 p.m. that day. Firefighters initially thought it was a fire, but later learned that six vehicles had collided.
Surveillance video from the scene showed a Mercedes speeding on South La Brea Boulevard, running a red light at an intersection and hitting another vehicle. The darker car hit, then hit several other cars. The Mercedes and two other vehicles caught fire after the collision and the wreckage stopped at the corner of the intersection after hitting a gas station.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol updated reports on the 5th that six people died and eight were injured in the serial accident, and several people jumped out of their cars in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
