Cardinals rumors: St. Louis could trade Xander Bogaerts for 3 assets

Jordan Walker, Springfield Cardinals

The Boston Red Sox could be forced to leave Xander Bogaerts. How to pry Bogartes out of the Red Sox’s hands if the St. Louis Cardinals are going to raid?

I don’t think that’s what the Boston Red Sox envisioned at the start of the 2022 season. After playing in the American League Championship Series last season, the Red Sox got off to a bad start and are currently living in the cellar of the AL East.

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays look like the best lineup of the season, and while it’s still early days, rumors have begun to circulate that Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts is in the trade block.

The St. Louis Cardinals were the perfect destination for the 29-year-old. The Red Jays recently sent longtime shortstop Paul De Jong to the Memphis Triple-A, and Edmondo Sousa is little more than a placeholder.

So, if the Cardinals wanted to trade a player as talented as Bogaerts, it would definitely cost a fortune. What assets might come into play in order to get the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals to a deal?

1. Cardinals prospect Jordan Walker could be an asset in trade for Xander Bogaerts

Will the St. Louis Cardinals give up their top prospect to sign Sandbogart? If they really want a three-time All-Star, they probably have to. Bogaerts can opt out after the 2023 election.

In addition to making three appearances in the Midsummer Classic, the Aruba native is a four-time silver bat, and while he’s not an elite linebacker, the Bogaerts can hold his own at shortstop.

The Cardinals already have Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado on the roster for the foreseeable future, so it looks like Jordan Walker is being held back at the majors level. The 19-year-old is still a few years away from his major league debut, but Walker is currently playing in Double-A Springfield.

MLB Pipeline counts Walker as top 100 prospect and third-best third base behind Brett Batty (New York Mets) and Josh Jung (Texas Rangers) Potential customers. If the Cardinals are really interested in trading Xander Bogaerts, the Red Sox should first demand that Jordan Walker be included in any potential trade.
