Peru is a case of international observation as it records active coexistence of four types of COVID-19 at the same time, after achieving the milestone of sequencing 10,000 genomes of the virus, experts from the National Institutes of Health (INS) said.

“We are a special case among many countries because We have four types of circulating: Gamma, Mu, Lambda and Delta, You don’t get to see this anywhere in the world.”, explained biologist Carlos Padilla, head of INS’s SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequencing team Andina Agency,

He indicated that this fact has been reported to the scientific community and described in various scientific articles, many of them already published.

“We are a special case because there are not so many variants agreed upon in other countries. In other countries, the dominant variant tends to dominate the others. We saw this first with the lambda variant and now with the delta, which in recent months is increased in its frequency and Represents more than 90% of positive cases across the country, However, others subsist”,

This is one of the main findings of genomic surveillance carried out by the various laboratories that are present in the regions and which report their samples to the INS.

The sequencing of 10,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes is a feat achieved in conjunction with contributions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Minsa), the Regional Hospital in Lambayeque, the Regional Reference Laboratory of Puno, and the Center for Biomedical Sciences. and Environmental Technology Research (CITBM).

These include the support of Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Naval Medical Research Unit Six (NAMRU-6), Universidad Nacional Agria de la Selva (UNAS), and Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza (UNTRM).

power of vaccination

The expert commented that, although in the rest of the world, the delta variant is dominant, in Peru its leadership was not achieved so quickly.

,The development of the delta variant is not as sudden as elsewhere as it coincides with the vaccination process in the country. Variations have co-existed, but we are already seeing that most of the reported cases are due to delta infection. Of its 100 subspecies registered in the world, 48 are already in Peru”, he emphasized.

The explanation would be that the variants entered the country at different times, which allowed their coexistence. A similar situation happened with the lambda version, which was the most reported across regions until the arrival of the delta version, which is time dominant.

“We reported this to the international community and we have been requested to share the lambda isolate, as it is not practiced in other countries, but is still there in Peru. For this reason The organic material worked here is shared,Padilla explained.

national landmark

For the head of the INS SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequencing team, achieving the analysis of 10,000 genomes is a milestone for the country, which serves as a test for working on other pathogens.

“At the South American level, we rank third in genetic sequencing of COVID-19, after Brazil and Argentina, countries that report more genomes in international databases”,

Padilla remarked that last year, the processing capacity of the INS was 10 times less, thanks to the large investment made by the Health Ministry in both equipment and reagents. in present 382 genomic samples are processed weekly,

“This amount of genome analyzed is unprecedented in Peru. we have plan These capabilities serve as an experience for other viruses such as dengue, HIV circulating in Peru. Such research provides us with a lot of information. It serves as a basis for doing it with other perversions”, he emphasized.

don’t lower your guard

The expert stressed that, although genomic surveillance is strategic and the responsibility of the state in the fight against the pandemic, citizens have their own tasks in the fight against COVID-19.

“We are at the end of the year, where the population neglects a bit with regard to their care measures, use of masks and self-isolating. Recommend you don’t lower your guard, Continue to take care of yourself as we know how to reduce disease transmission,,

He urged the population to support the vaccination process against COVID-19, as it has been shown that it has been a brake on the expansion of some variants, especially delta, as compared to other variants circulating in the country. is more contagious.
