“Daniel didn’t show his talent in the bat” – MI bowling coach Shane Bond explains Sams’ promotion to No. 3 against CSK

Mumbai Indians (MI) bowling coach Shane Bond explained that lifting Daniel Sams to third place against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was to try something different because they had nothing loseable. However, he admitted that the Australian all-rounder didn’t take his chances with the bat.

Mumbai beat Chennai by five wickets in the IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (May 12).

After chasing 98, MI sent Sams to 3rd after the cheap death of Ishan Kishan. Sams was unable to impress and was stuck at 1(6) lbs by Mukesh Choudhary.

In the post-match meeting, Bond was asked about the motivation behind the bizarre move.respond to one Sports Kida Asked, he said:

“Daniel probably hasn’t shown his talent in the bat. We talked at the beginning of this (season), maybe, take the opportunity to play him and see what he can do. He’s not taking his chances for a while. We passed This year’s BBL saw him come in at No. 4 and put in some good performances. It was a move that didn’t pay off. Because you’re bottom, you get a chance to try something different.”

While his bat failed, Sams earned “Player of the Game” honors for his 3-for-16 shooting. He fired Devon Conway and Moeen Ali in the first round and then added a scalp to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Bond praised the left-arm sealer, saying:

“He’s doing a really good job. Obviously, my relationship with Daniel goes back a long way. We’ve been with the Sydney Thunder for three years (Bond was the coach at the time), so we have a very close working relationship. Disappointed early in the game. But he really worked hard to come back. He took the wicket for us at the start of the innings. He bowled one last time against Gujarat and it was unbelievable.”

“He’s a good player. His bowling is getting better and better.”

Sams dropped 35 points against the Calcutta Cavaliers and Pat Cummins beat the joint fastest IPL 50 points. He has made an incredible comeback since then and has been one of the most influential strikers in IPL 2022.

‘You want to give players more than one game’ – Bond on possibility of MI playing XI

Mumbai made two changes to their game on Thursday. Birthday boy Kieron Pollard was replaced by Tristan Stubbs, while Hrithik Shokeen was replaced by Murugan Ashwin. When asked if there will be more changes in the upcoming games, Bond replied:

“I’m not sure if that’s the short answer. Even with the changes we made today, you still want to give the players more than one game. I don’t think you need to play 25 players even in your position. You Trying to find opportunities for those players who deserve it with their training performances and maybe carry some performances over to next year. We still have a few games to play. It’s up to the players to take that opportunity.”

Mumbai’s remaining IPL 2022 matches are against SunRisers Hyderabad (May 17) and Delhi Capitals (May 21).
