Dramatic video shows fiery crash involving dump truck on Ohio highway

Horrific footage has captured a dump truck in Ohio smashing into another vehicle parked on the shoulder of a busy highway and causing an explosion.

The incident happened just after 7:20 a.m. Thursday on I-77 in Akron when an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle stopped to collect some trash from the road.

Footage shows the unnamed ODOT employee still in the car when a dump truck veered off its lane and hit a parked vehicle.

The impact produced an explosion that engulfed the two vehicles in a fireball that sent orange flames and thick black smoke into the morning sky.

According to Cleveland News 5, six motorists stopped to help the victim.

Both drivers were taken to hospital.

Representatives from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, who were called to the scene, had to remove the drivers of both vehicles.

At a news conference in front of the charred wreckage, ODOT District 4 Deputy Gery Noirot described the injured staff member as a married father and grandfather and said “it’s a miracle he survived.”

Noirot added that the injured man had been with the department for ten years and was on his way to pick up the equipment when the accident happened.

“It was terrifying to see that crash. And to think he survived … there were people watching him, obviously,” Nolo told reporters.

ODOT posted a statement on its Facebook page on Thursday, revealing that the morning’s crash marked the 82nd time one of its staff members has been hit so far this year.

“We are very lucky that he is still alive,” the agency said of its injured driver.
