nato(NATO) Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said today that Finland’s leaders are welcome to support joining NATO, adding that the final membership process will be “smooth and fast”.
Finnish President Saulie Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin ignored warnings from Moscow and issued a statement hours ago expressing their support for Finland’s application to join NATO. It is expected that Finland will formally announce its application to join on the 15th.
“This is Finland’s sovereign decision, which NATO fully respects, and will be warmly welcomed by NATO if Finland decides to apply for membership,” Stoltenberg said.
The Kremlin said today that Finland’s membership in NATO is an “undoubtedly” threat to Russia, while NATO expansion will not make Europe or the world more stable.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media that Finland’s move to join NATO would be regrettable and would invite the same reaction.

“We also discussed Ukraine-Europe integration. And defensive dialogue,” Zelensky tweeted.
