Frankie Dettori will not play for John and Thady Gosden at Newmarket on Saturday.
While the Italian will be riding a Ralph Beckett-trained Lezoo at headquarters for the Moulin Britton Memorial Queen Phyllis Championship owned by his friend Marc Chan, his name does not appear on the card for the two recipients. Next to the runners Stern trains.
Having ridden the Sunray Major and Stowel for most of their careers, the former will be the mount for James Doyle in the Criterion Stakes and Robert Havlin the latter in the Fred Archer Stakes.
The news comes after the Royal Turf Test sessions for Gosdens and Dettori.
Dettori was sharply criticized by Gosden seniors after riding Stradivarius in the Gold Cup, and in the next race, Queen’s Saga failed to catch Thesis by one stroke at the Britannia Championship.
While it’s not uncommon for Dettori to miss midweek games, he’s expected to pick up where he left off this weekend.
Dettori’s manager, Peter Burrell, told PA news agency: “We are like everyone else looking for answers in the dark.”
After splitting with Godolphin, Gosden helped Dettori’s career get back on track, and both were hugely successful.
The likes of Enable, Stradivarius, Golden Horn and Palace Pier all helped Dettori stay at the top of the charts and made a splash in the Coronation Stakes with Inspiral on Friday.
