Hours after we first saw a potential design for the Samsung Z Fold 4, unofficial renders of its smaller sibling, the Z Flip 4, also pass 91 mobile phone and leakBut while the next Fold may have a redesigned camera bump, the Z Flip 4’s design looks almost identical to its predecessor. On the outside, it still has a two-tone color scheme with a pair of cameras and a small notification display, while on the inside there’s still a 6.7-inch foldable display with a hole-punch selfie cutout in the top center.
This isn’t necessarily a surprise, and it’s definitely not a bad thing. Samsung unveiled its first Z Flip a few months later with the nearly identical Z Flip 5G, so it’s already proven that it’s happy to update the internals of its foldable device without changing its appearance. And since we were so impressed with last year’s Z Flip 3 (“the average person’s first foldable phone”), it doesn’t really matter that we get a design overhaul right away, even if we wouldn’t say no to a slightly larger external display.
If Samsung plans to upgrade its next Z Flip to specs, we’d expect its specs to actually get a nice bump. The rear camera needs the most improvement, last time it was 12-megapixel, when Samsung’s relatively pricier flagship Galaxy S devices were getting 50-megapixel or higher primary sensors. If Samsung follows the same schedule as last year, an official announcement is expected in August.
