The Japan Patent Office announced on November 22 that it will hold the first machine learning competition “AI x Trademark: Image Search Competition”. The purpose is to develop an image search tool that uses AI technology to search for graphic trademarks. The adopted machine learning model will be piloted for examination by the Patent Office. The total prize money is 500,000 yen, with the first place being 300,000 yen, the second place being 150,000 yen, and the third place being 50,000 yen.

Specifically, it learns data of similar graphic trademarks and develops a model that predicts similar images from a large number of graphic trademarks. In the examination, the accuracy is questioned.

There are no particular qualifications to participate, and both individuals and groups can participate. Those who wish to participate should register for an account (free of charge) at Nishika, the operator of the competition, and participate from the information page (below). The rules of the competition include that the same person cannot participate from multiple accounts, and only software that is open and free for commercial use can be used (use of paid tools such as Google Cloud Vision API is prohibited).
