Knicks select cap space in 2022 NBA Draft, trade away picks and Kemba Walker

The Knicks waived their first-round pick and waived Kemba Walker.

The first two hours of the draft were confusing and hectic for the Knicks, showing little in the short term, but their Jalen Brunson pursuit has more cap space.

They failed to trade Jaden Ivey, the Pistons’ fifth overall pick. Leon Rose then handed his 11th overall pick to Oklahoma in exchange for three future lottery-protected first-round picks, though the Barclays Center audience didn’t know it, the pair of picks Ousmane Dieng booed because they thought the French had gone to New York.

After two draft picks, at No. 13, the Hornets sent Memphis center Jalen Durham to the Pistons in a three-team trade with the Knicks, and Walker traveled to Detroit for the Knicks’ first- and fourth-round picks. round round.

So Walker’s sad homecoming chapter is over, and the Knicks paid the draft money for it. He has $9.2 million left on his contract, which the Pistons will likely eat by releasing the Bronx-born point guard.

The Pistons emerged as draft winners by adding Ivey and Durham to the roster of Rookie of the Year Carden Cunningham.

The Knicks were, if nothing else, a draft-day disappointment after flirting with fireworks. In the long run, maybe the pay cut will work in their pursuit of Brunson or Malcolm Brogdon or (swallowing) Kyrie Irving, but sacrificing draft picks to get rid of players they signed a year ago is a good idea Management’s acknowledgment of failure.

According to ESPN shot-blocking guru Bobby Marks, the Knicks are under $18 million in salary cap after getting rid of Walker. They also tried to trade Nerlens Noel, Alec Burks and Evan Fournier before free agency. According to league analysts, an offer starting at $25 million should be too high for Brunson, but the Knicks are bullish on the point guard.

It’s also worth noting that Brunson’s father, Rick, has just been hired as an assistant coach and is close to team president Leon Rose.

Rose’s son Sam now represents Jalen Brunson in CAA.

The night started in shocking fashion, with Duke’s Paolo Banchero finishing first overall, blowing up a mock board that had Auburn’s Jabari Smith as the consensus first choice.

Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren was behind OKC, while Smith was third in a loss to the Rockets. Iowa’s Keegan Murray at No. 4 was a slight surprise for the Kings, who waived Ivey. Perhaps not coincidentally, Ivey wasn’t keen on joining the Kings and said he had no ties to the organization prior to the draft.

After a disappointing 11th-place finish last season, the Knicks gave up in the first round and climbed to fourth a year later.

Barring any surprises, Julius Randle and RJ Barrett will lead the team after averaging more than 20 points per game last season. Randle’s performance and mood remain a hot topic after last season’s deterioration.

Derrick Rose should be back from his ankle surgery to bolster the offense, but young players — especially Obi Toppin, Emanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes — are at the end of the season Rapid rise and earned consideration for more roles.

great experience

This is the NBA Draft’s first-year NBA experience, attracting fans who pay for two days of dining and immersion.

One of the perks was a steak dinner with Dominic Wilkins, who provided the following great story about his career:

· Bernard King is the only player who has ever intimidated him.

· Former Eagles teammate Kevin Willis often upset himself before games by holding an onion to his chest.

Michael Jordan admitted to Wilkins that the only reason he won their famous 1988 Slam Dunk Contest was because it was in Chicago.
