Commenting on Mr Barretta’s support, Mr Koman said: “I think it’s the right thing to do.
Pennsylvania will hold two important statewide elections in November, including an open Senate seat and an open race for governor. With governors appointing secretaries of state, governor competition is becoming more and more important in the increasingly fierce battle for electoral control.
Mr Barletta said he had not spoken to any other candidate or attacked Mr Mastriano for possible support. But he made a similar appeal for the unification of the campaign.
“It is important that Republicans support the candidate who can win the nomination and defeat Josh Shapiro in November,” Mr Barletta said.
Following Mr Corman’s announcement, former Senator Rick Santorum issued a statement expressing his “strong support” for Mr Barretta. (Mr. Santorum initially supported Mr. Common.)
