The Nintendo Switch has already surpassed its most important competitor in sales in the US. Lifetime sales of hybrid home/handheld devices have now surpassed PlayStation 4s, according to industry tracker NPD Group.

“The lifetime sales of the Nintendo Switch have now surpassed the PlayStation 4, making it the fourth-best-selling console in U.S. history and the sixth-best-selling video game hardware platform overall.”

This is a major milestone for the Nintendo system. It’s just behind a handful of the best-selling home consoles.

“In consoles, the Switch is second only to the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii in sales,” Piscatella said.

As usual, the Switch led hardware sales in April and continues to outpace the Xbox and PlayStation so far this year. The Xbox Series X/S were the second-ranked consoles in both periods, while the PlayStation 5 remained in limited supply.

However, in terms of sales, the PlayStation came out on top.

“Hardware sales of the PlayStation 5 led in April, followed by the Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch,” Piscatella said. “To date, the Xbox series has generated the highest hardware revenue of all platforms, followed by PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.”

With no $300 option like the Xbox Series S, the PlayStation 5 has the highest average selling price. This allows it to generate more revenue while selling its very limited supply of consoles.

But overall, hardware surged year-over-year in April due to increased availability. This may just be a preview of what’s to come, as supply is still unlikely to return to normal levels permanently before the end of the year.

“Dollar sales of video game hardware rose 16 percent from a year ago to $343 million, driven by increased supply of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox line of consoles,” Piscatella said. “Year-to-date hardware spending fell 9% to $1.5 billion.”

But for now, the industry is on a roll. This should help set the stage for the big companies in the second half of the year…if they have any games to release, it is.
