Joseph Dituri, a 55-year-old professor at the University of South Florida (University of South Florida), has launched a crazy challenge called "Project Neptune" since March 1.
He will spend 100 days in the underwater hotel, observing and recording changes in his body as part of biological research.
Foreign media such as “USA Today” and “New York Post” reported that Joseph, nicknamed “Dr. Deepsea” (Dr. Deepsea), had served as a diving officer in the US Navy for 28 years.
In 2012, he was invited by the famous film director James Cameron (James Cameron) to test a submarine in the Mariana Trench (Mariana Trench). During the process, he had a crazy idea of underwater life and decided to start from March 1. Live hundreds of days under the sea and study changes in the human body under extreme stress.
If he succeeds in the challenge, he will surpass the previous record of 73 days underwater life.
Joseph’s residence is the Jules Undersea Lodge, the only underwater hotel in the United States, located in the lagoon of Key Largo, Florida, at a depth of about 6.7 meters underwater.
During the challenge, a medical team will regularly dive into the water to check his health, including blood, ultrasound and electrocardiogram. He will also undergo a physiological and psychological examination to observe the impact of being alone in a small space for a long time.
In addition, he also wants to prove the research that “increased water pressure will allow cells to renew within 5 days, thereby preventing aging”.
Joseph revealed that within a hundred days, he will still teach biomedical courses through the Internet, and he can still chat with relatives and friends; due to the lack of sunlight, he must take vitamin D orally, and he also asked his family for a photo of the sun.
He also recorded his underwater life and put it on social platforms such as IG, so that the public can participate in this great project.
