No. 1 seed El Camino Real wins City Division Open softball playoff opener

Jodi Borenstein, seventh-year softball coach at No. 1 seed El Camino Real, was asked Wednesday afternoon to consider former Hall of Fame coaches Niles Ludlow and Lori Chandler in attendance. After all, they coached many of the school’s 17 city championship teams.

“I love it,” she said. “I like the support.”

El Camino Real went on to beat Eagle Rock 14-4 in five innings. Pitcher Brooke DeSmet gave up a hit. Courtney Cohen had two runs in the first inning and finished with two hits. Sofia Fisher also had two hits.

The Royals advance to next Tuesday’s semifinals against another 17-time champion, San Pedro, who beat Banning 8-1. San Pedro pitcher Lily Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings. Madison Fao had four RBIs.

The other semifinal will be No. 6 Carson against No. 7 Kennedy. Carson beat Birmingham 7-2. Kennedy defeated No. 2 seed Granada Hills 7-6. The Golden Lions lead 6-0. Granada Hills tied the game at 6-6, but Kennedy took the lead in the seventh.
