Rafael Nadal kept his Grand Slam dream on Wednesday, but it took everything he had.
In a gruelling 4 hours and 21 minutes, the Spaniard defeated American Taylor Fritz 10-4 in the fifth-set tiebreaker.
Nadal, the Australian Open and French Open champion, will face Wimbledon semi-final against Australian Nick Kyrgios, who beat Chile’s Christian Garin in straight sets earlier in the day ‘s game to victory – a game that takes about half the time of Nadal Fritz.
Nadal won 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(4). Early in the game, his foot injury was so painful that he later said he almost gave up. In fact, his father was in the player’s box urging him to call it quits.
“A lot of times I thought, I might not be able to finish the game,” Nadal said later. “But the pitch, the energy is another thing.”
He hopes to become the first man to complete a calendar major since 1969 and win all four majors in the same year. Rod Laver was the last to accomplish this feat.
