Texas deputy killed in collision with 18-wheeler, another injured in hospital escort

A Texas sheriff’s deputy was killed Wednesday after he collided with an 18-wheel truck on a Houston-area highway, and another was injured while being escorted to a hospital, authorities said.

Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Adam Howard, 27, died shortly after the accident on State Route 249 in suburban Houston.

Authorities said he was initially taken to hospital in critical condition before he died.

While escorting Howard to the hospital, the second officer on the motorcycle was injured in the crash as authorities blocked traffic, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

The deputy was not seriously injured, he said.

Pictures from the scene showed a commercial truck parked on the side of the highway and a sheriff’s patrol car was hit on its left with its roof overturned.

All northbound lanes on the highway have been closed as authorities investigate.

The sheriff’s patrol car was seen smashed to the left and its roof ripped off after fatal crash.
