Construction of the administrative capital of Egypt began in 2015, 50 kilometers east of Cairo. The area of the future city will be 700 square kilometers, the cost of the project is estimated at 45 billion dollars. It is planned that about 6.5 million Egyptians will live in the new city. The country’s parliament and more than 50,000 government officials and employees, as well as foreign embassies, are to be transported there. The official opening of the new capital was scheduled for 2020, but due to the pandemic it was postponed until at least 2022. Throughout the construction period, the city did not have its own name.
According to the Minister of Housing of Egypt Mustafa Madbuli, in the new city, which will be the size of Singapore, it is planned to build more than a million homes. The idea of moving the country’s capital is associated with the overpopulation of 20 million Cairo. At the same time, Cairo’s population is expected to double in 40 years.
