The U.S. Coast Guard says 11 people have been killed and 31 rescued after a boat carrying migrants capsized 10 miles north of De Seco Island on Thursday.
Customs and Border Protection aircraft crews spotted the capsized ship just before noon, the agency said. The Coast Guard said crews reported people in the water were not wearing life jackets.
The Coast Guard said the ship was “suspected of being involved in illegal navigation”.
A Coast Guard spokesman said Thursday night that the agency was still alive and did not know how many people were on board.
