Well-wishers stop carjacking suspect in Barrio Logan

A man kidnapped a young woman in Barrio Logan on Thursday night, but witnesses jumped in to help stop the man until police arrived and arrested him, authorities said.

San Diego Police Sgt. Robert Heims said the incident happened around 7:25 p.m. when the suspect, a 41-year-old man, was on South 16th between Logan Avenue and National Avenue. The 22-year-old victim was approached outside a secure parking lot on the street. .

The suspect started an argument with the victim outside the parking lot, and then followed her as soon as she got in the car, Hymes said at a news conference. The suspect started arguing with her again when the victim got into the car, she got into the car and tried to drive away.

As she did so, the suspect reached into the car, snatched the victim’s phone, and then yanked her keys, snapping them inside the ignition, Hymes said. The victim got out of the car and tried to get the phone back, but when she was successful, the suspect jumped into the car and drove away.

As he drove to the closed gates of the parking lot, several well-wishers stopped him until police arrived and arrested him on suspicion of carjacking, Hymes said. Robbery detectives are investigating the incident.
