Discogs is a mix of a personal catalog of your own record collection and a marketplace to buy hard-to-find records from others. Prices for ultra-rare vinyl are often high, but this is a good place to browse to see the relative prices of the release you’re looking for.

With over 600,000 contributors since its founding in 2000, Discogs is easily the place where the internet’s most popular vinyl collectors show others their catalogs (and sell valuable items). The database on the site includes over 15 million albums covering 8 million artists and 1.7 million labels(!). Needless to say, if you can’t find it here, it’s pretty rare. Discogs also sells CDs, cassettes and other music media (though it mostly sells vinyl records).

Experience Vinyl is a record club without the hassle of a monthly membership. The company releases interesting and rare releases every month, but you’re not obligated to buy them.This includes 500 limited-edition copies of Eliott Smith’s From the basement on the hillthe blue press of Leon Russell’s eponymous LP, and the red vinyl press of Sly & the Family Stone fresh. Prices range from $25 to hundreds of dollars, depending on what you buy.

Looking for cool and obscure records? Check out Dusty Groove, a Chicago-based store that was one of the first to sell vinyl records online, selling its first record in April 1996. The EIL doesn’t look like it’s been updated since the early 2000s, but the rare vinyl market is still the only place you’ll find some exclusive releases. The world’s most popular online auction site is a great place to find rare records, although you’ll need to be specific in your search. Make sure to get a photo of the condition of the record before buying. I prefer to buy from actual stores or private sellers on Discogs, but sometimes eBay is the only (or cheapest) place you can find stuff.

Secretly Group consists of well-known indie labels Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar and Dead Oceans, which basically means that if you like modern indie bands, they have a great brand.
