The San Gabriel Fire Department’s urban search and rescue team, the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, consists of five firefighters who have professional search and rescue team qualifications and were assigned to Rescue Task Force 4 (RTF 4). RTF4 is a team made up of Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, San Gabriel, Monterey Park and Pasadena. Its main responsibility is to provide rescue services in the local area. There are only two international rescue teams in the United States, one belonging to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the other in Virginia. All members are trained according to federal standards and participate in international rescue missions with the approval of the Governor. San Gabriel firefighters are part of a quick response force that is typically deployed within the first few hours of a natural disaster and is ready for international rescue missions. Within 48 hours of mission launch, all necessary airlift logistics preparations will be completed to ensure rescue teams can quickly and effectively conduct international rescues.
