After hearing the news, the Chinese community felt deeply indignant and unbearable.

Several incidents of anti-Asian violence occurred across the country in the summer of 2021. Anh “Peng” Taylor, a 94-year-old Vietnamese immigrant, was walking down the street in Lower Nob Hill one day when Daniel Cowich stabbed him multiple times in broad daylight. And this incident was captured on camera. This brutal and bloody crime sparked public outrage and the police immediately arrested the suspect.

Cowich was charged with attempted murder, elder abuse and assault. Cowich was also charged with multiple counts of theft in separate, unrelated cases. The murder case was originally handled by progressive prosecutor Chesa Boudin. But he was dismissed in 2022 and newly elected Xi Jinping took over.

Cowich’s defense attorney, Lisa Dewberry, said Cowich suffered from a traumatic brain injury and mental illness, which led him to commit the heinous crime. But at that time he did not know his mistake. When he told Caoichi what he had done to An Peng, Caoichi began to cry in remorse.

The case came to trial in San Francisco Superior Court on the 15th, nearly three years after the murder. Despite objections from the prosecutor’s office, Judge K Tsenin gave Kautsch a suspended sentence. However, she warned Cowitch in court that he would have to undergo strict “Intensive Supervision Court” monitoring. If he violates any parole conditions, he will be sent to state prison.

Cowichan remained in jail for approximately 1,000 days while he was arrested and awaiting trial. Lawyer Dewberry said she understood the public’s outrage over the stabbing of an innocent elderly woman. However, after investigation by law enforcement agencies, it was confirmed that Cowich had no hatred towards the victim.

Peng’s family said she has recovered from her injuries. Now, at the age of 97, she has been admitted to a nursing home and is living a peaceful life.
